Lightning Protection System – Conventional Lightning Arrester
In negative cloud-to-ground flashes, the first return stroke is initiated by a discharge that travels from the cloud to the ground, known as a stepped leader. As the stepped leader approaches the ground, the electric field at the extremities of the grounded objects increases to such a level that it launches connecting leaders towards the descending stepped leader. The first return stroke is initiated at the moment of connection between the descending stepped leader and one of the connecting leaders.
The point of contact between the connecting leader and the stepped leader is called the strike point of the lightning flash. Based on current knowledge, primarily derived from laboratory experiments, we can specify the necessary conditions, which may not be sufficient, for successfully launching a connecting leader from a grounded object such as a Franklin conductor.
These conditions are as follows:
(1) The initiation of a streamer discharge at the tip of the Franklin rod.
(2) The presence of the correct spatial distribution of the background electric field required for the transition from streamer to leader.
(3) The availability of the critical background electric field necessary for the continuous propagation of the connecting leader.
(4) The successful attachment of the connecting leader to the stepped leader, which may depend on the geometry and propagation speeds of the leaders.
Components of a Lightning Protection System
Electrical rods or 'air terminals' are just one component of a comprehensive electrical protection system. In reality, the significance of rods within a system installation can often be minimal compared to other components.
Lightning Protection System Components
'Air Terminals' Small, vertically protruding rods intended to serve as a terminal for lightning discharges, come in various shapes, sizes, and designs. They are typically equipped with either a long, pointed needle or a smooth, polished sphere at the top.
‘Conductor Cables’ -Heavy wires are used to conduct lightning from the air terminals to the ground. These wires are installed along the top and around the edges of the roof, and they may also extend down one or more sides of the building, connecting to ground rod(s)
‘Ground Rods’ – Long, dense, heavy rods are buried deep in the earth around protected structures.
Conductor cables are attached to these rods to complete the safe path for lightning around any structure. Conductor cables and ground rods are the most
important components of an electrical protection system, carrying out the main purpose of safe current flow outside any structure.
Air Termination arrangement and siting methods
Three methods can be used to determine the arrangement and the siting of
the air-termination systems.
Rolling sphere method
Protection angle method
Mesh method
The rolling sphere method is the universal method of design particularly recommended for geometrically complicated applications.
